482 Work Visa Application in the time of COVID-19

With borders shut and many organisations returning to growth, the talent pool for experienced staff has shrunk. Unemployment has also decreased and the current figure is lower than what was first predicted by the Federal government.

This provides a great opportunity for those skilled migrants, currently in Australia, who have been waiting for months to receive an invitation. You may now have an opportunity to be sponsored by an employer seeking your skill set!

Key statistics

Seasonally adjusted estimates for January 2021:

Australian Employment in Australia 2021

“The latest release of the Internet Vacancy Index (IVI) shows the ninth consecutive month of job advertisement growth, with a total of 175,100 job advertisements newly added in January 2021. The level of new job advertisements has increased by 1.6% or 2,800 over the month, and now stands 11.1% or 17,500 job advertisements higher than the same time last year.
The data also reveals job advertisements now exceed pre-COVID-19 levels in all states and territories except New South Wales and Victoria.”

A quick search on one of the major job searches showed 788 opening opportunities stating the company is willing to sponsor’ the right candidate. But which occupations are emerging for 2021 that may lead you to your Temporary 482 Work Visa?

Can I enter Australia on a 482 Visa?

Those who will benefit the most from existing demand will be onshore applicants as applicants offshore (not in Australia) will not receive a visa if they are not in a sector that is considered a critical need that will assist with Australia’s economic recovery.

Can 482 visa holders return to Australia?

Whilst Australia’s international borders are closed to all temporary residents, temporary visa holders can only enter Australia if on the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation list and obtained a travel exemption.  OR if the employer is working in an area of critical need such as food production, agriculture, construction, health etc

My occupation is on demand and my employer demonstrated interest in sponsoring me, what should I do?

The first thing you need to understand is that employer sponsorship is not an easy process and not all companies meet the criteria to become a Standard Business Sponsor.

Your prospective employer will need to prove they tried to find an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident for the position and they must also pay the Skills Australia Fund levy.

My company wants to sponsor me
