Changes to the Temporary Graduate Visa Program – Subclass 485

What is the Temporary Graduate 485 Visa?

  • A visa for international students who have completed at least two years of study in Australia.
  • Allows work in any capacity with no restrictions.

Key Changes

  1. Age Criteria:
    • Effective 1 July 2024, applicants must be 35 years or under at the time of application (down from 50).
    • Exceptions: PhD or Masters (research) graduates can still apply if they are under 50.
  2. Visa Extensions:
    • Extensions after the initial visa duration are no longer available.
  3. Renaming of Visa Streams:
    • Post-Higher Education Work (PHEW): Previously Post-Study Work.
    • Post-Vocational Education Work (PVEW): Previously Graduate Work.

Exemptions

  • PHEW Stream:
    • PhD and Masters (Research) graduates are exempt from the 35-year age limit.
    • Hong Kong SAR or British National Overseas passport holders can apply if they are under 50.
  • PVEW Stream:
    • This is for those with an associate degree, diploma, or trade qualification.
    • Must align with an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List.
    • Hong Kong SAR or British National Overseas passport holders can apply if they are under 50 and may stay for up to 5 years.

Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream

  • Available if you held the first Temporary Graduate visa in the Post-Higher Education Work (Post-Study work) or the Replacement stream and have held a Temporary Graduate visa in the relevant streams as the main applicant.
