Australia’s Working Holiday Maker (WHM) Program continues to expand, creating exciting new opportunities for young people worldwide to experience life in Australia while seeking skilled employment. With over 40 partner countries already participating, this visa program is becoming an increasingly valuable stepping stone for those looking to establish themselves in Australia—whether through securing employer sponsorship or transitioning to a more permanent independent visa pathway.

Two Visa Options Under the WHM Program

The WHM Program consists of two visa subclasses:

  • Subclass 417 – Working Holiday Visa
  • Subclass 462 – Work and Holiday Visa

Each visa has specific eligibility criteria depending on the applicant’s country of origin. The Subclass 462 visa has been expanding, welcoming more nationalities into the program, making it a viable route for those who may not qualify for other temporary visas.

New Countries Joining the Program

The Australian Government has expanded access to the Subclass 462 visa, introducing China, Vietnam, and India into the program. A ballot system has been implemented to manage demand for applicants from these countries. This lottery-based selection process is held annually within the program year, with the first round taking place in 2024/2025.

Additionally, the Philippines has been approved as a new partner country under the Subclass 462 program. While the official start date has not yet been announced, arrangements are currently being finalised, and further details will be published by the Department of Home Affairs once the program is ready to launch.

The Ballot Process for Certain Countries

For applicants from China, Vietnam, and India, participation in the ballot system is required before applying for a visa. To enter, you must:

  • Create an ImmiAccount
  • Be aged between 18 and 30
  • Hold a valid passport and national identity card from an eligible ballot country
  • Have a valid email address and verify it
  • Agree to the registration declaration
  • Pay the AUD $25 registration fee

You can register from inside or outside Australia, but if selected, your first visa application must be lodged from outside Australia.

A Strong Opportunity for Skilled Migration

The Working Holiday Maker Program is more than just a travel visa—it is a fantastic opportunity for young professionals to gain valuable Australian work experience, make employer connections, and explore long-term pathways to staying in Australia.

  • Successful applicants receive a one-year visa with six months’ work rights per employer (unless exempt)
  • Eligible participants can apply for a second or third Work and Holiday visa, extending their stay and increasing their chances of securing sponsorship or transitioning to a skilled visa

For those considering a long-term future in Australia, the WHM Program can be a critical first step in proving your skills to Australian employers or fulfilling requirements for skilled migration pathways.

Act Fast – Limited Spots Available!

Many Subclass 462 partner countries have an annual cap on visa places, meaning applications can close quickly once limits are reached. If you are interested in applying, it is crucial to stay updated on your country’s availability and act promptly when the application window opens.

With Australia broadening access to this visa, more young people now have the chance to experience life and work in the country—potentially turning their temporary stay into a long-term future in Australia.
