International Migrants Day (IMD) is observed each year on 18 December, reaffirming the global commitment to safer, more inclusive, and fairer migration systems in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world.

At its core, International Migrants Day is about people — their journeys, their resilience, and their fundamental right to live with dignity, safety, and belonging.

A Moment for Reflection

This year, International Migrants Day falls at a time when many in our community are still processing the deeply distressing events that recently unfolded in Bondi, Sydney. Incidents like these resonate far beyond a single location; they shake our collective sense of safety and can disproportionately affect migrant and multicultural communities who may already feel vulnerable or marginalised.

Moments such as these remind us that the right to feel safe is universal. No one should live in fear because of their background, their culture, their language, or their faith.

The Right to Culture, Faith and Community

Migration is not just about movement across borders — it is about identity, belonging, and contribution. Migrants bring with them traditions, customs, languages, and beliefs that enrich the social fabric of Australia.

Every person has the right and freedom to practise their culture, observe religious days, and live according to their customs, without fear or intimidation. These freedoms are fundamental human rights and must be protected, particularly in times of heightened tension or uncertainty.

Australia’s strength has always been its diversity. Our multicultural communities are not something to be tolerated — they are something to be valued, respected, and celebrated.

Why International Migrants Day Matters

International Migrants Day is a call to action:

  • To advocate for safe and humane migration pathways
  • To promote fair and transparent migration systems
  • To foster inclusion, understanding, and social cohesion
  • To stand against fear, discrimination, and division

For those of us working in migration, it is also a reminder of the responsibility we carry — to support individuals and families not only through legal processes, but through life-changing transitions that require trust, compassion, and care.

Standing Together

On this International Migrants Day, we stand with migrant communities across Australia and around the world. We reaffirm that:

  • Everyone deserves to feel safe in their neighbourhoods
  • Everyone has the right to belong
  • Everyone’s culture, customs, and faith matter

At a time when fear can easily take hold, empathy, understanding, and unity matter more than ever.

Migration, when supported by fairness and compassion, strengthens us all.
