A Personal Journey Across Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth
Migrating to a new country is filled with excitement, hope, and often some serious challenges. My journey from India to Australia is a testament to this. Years ago, as I anxiously researched Australian immigration updates, I became a subscriber to Migration Downunder’s YouTube channel, seeking guidance and information. Little did I know that someday I’d be working for this very agency, helping others on their migration journeys as a Migration Coordinator. Today, I’m privileged to share my own story across Melbourne, Sydney, and now Perth, along with insights I’ve gathered both personally and professionally.
Navigating Visa Challenges: A Test of Patience and Resilience
One of the most critical steps in migration is securing the right visa. In my case, I applied for the subclass 189 visa in January 2020, just before the world turned upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When Australia closed its borders, my husband and I had to put our dreams on hold, enduring a four-year wait. There were times when our hopes faded; we even considered relocating to the UK on a student visa.
But in October 2023, just as we were beginning to let go of our Australian dream, the Australian Department of Home Affairs invited us to apply for our visa. Finally, in November 2024, our visa was approved.
Throughout this period, I constantly sought updates on Australia’s immigration policies. It was then that I discovered Migration Downunder’s YouTube channel. The channel’s videos on invitation rounds, processing times, and migration insights provided the clarity and hope we needed to stay optimistic. Subscribing to these updates reignited my confidence, and when our visa was finally approved, it felt surreal. Migration Downunder had become a trusted guide in our journey—and would soon become a place of work for me.
Settling in Melbourne: A World of Firsts
Landing in Melbourne felt like stepping into a new world. Australia’s cleanliness, orderliness, and natural beauty made it feel almost dreamlike. The contrasts with life in India were striking, from the patient, honk-free flow of traffic to the fair minimum wage across all jobs.
Melbourne soon became my home. I joined Migration Downunder’s team, thrilled to work for the agency that had supported my journey. Here, I could share my migration story with others just beginning their own. Melbourne’s multicultural vibe, its coffee culture, and its arts scene captivated me, and working here offered me a work-life balance I had always dreamed of. I could enjoy both my job and the city’s vibrant culture—a rare combination.
A New Adventure in Sydney
My role as a Migration Coordinator took me frequently between Melbourne and Sydney, which introduced me to the unique rhythms of each city. I vividly remember my first trip to Sydney, nervous but eager to experience a new city. Sydney’s bustling harbor, iconic landmarks, and fast-paced environment felt grand yet welcoming. Traveling alone for the first time to another Australian state was a big step, but I quickly learned that Australians are friendly and supportive no matter the city, making Sydney feel like home right away.
Working across two major cities broadened my perspective and gave me a deeper understanding of Australia’s regional diversity. Melbourne’s laid-back atmosphere and Sydney’s energy each have their appeal, and I enjoyed exploring both.
Embracing Change Again: A Move to Perth
After several fulfilling months between Melbourne and Sydney, my journey took another unexpected turn. My husband landed a job in Perth within his field of oil and gas, so we decided to relocate once again. While I initially hesitated to leave the east coast, I was grateful Migration Downunder allowed me to continue my work remotely from Perth.
Perth, with its quiet charm and slower pace, has offered me a fresh perspective on life in Australia. The sunny mornings, peaceful surroundings, and the local community’s warmth make it feel like a world apart from the bigger cities. Each morning, the bright Perth sunshine energises me, and I’m slowly discovering a new sense of home in this beautiful city.
